Hey! Thanks for coming.
Julia Ambros is stuck in Creatureville.

She is a maker and creature creator (!), and is currently studying Ceramics & Furniture Design at the Rhode Island School of Design.

She was born in Athens, OH, raised in San Diego, CA, and now happily lives in Providence, RI. She loves red trees, feeding the ducks, artesanías, and 2000s club music.

Some current interests include….

-    The intersection of the cute and the absurd ^-^
-    Working with children and community art education
-    Steel and clay as complementary materials: force and gentleness, strength and fragility
-    Light as a life-giving force and material
-    Embrace of ornament as a joyful act of resistance!

Ultimately, present day Julia is trying to find ways to search for conceptual purpose without leaving behind the 10 year-old Julia who made things simply because it made her happy.

Artist Statement

I am interested in bridging the identities of artist, designer, and craftsperson. I feel I could be categorized as any one of these three, but I am most curious about what happens when one identifies simultaneously as all of them, as they are each associated with different levels of creative autonomy and power.

I value everything sweet. I am curious about the intersection between the cute and the absurd, the unassuming power of glittery playfulness, and objects that teeter between functional and decorative. I am focused on worldbuilding and developing the fantastical world of Summer, Surprise, and Happiness, a trio of lumpy but magical ceramic creatures. I am developing an immersive, candy-colored, yet emotionally complex world fit for the trio and what they represent.

I care less and less about being taken seriously, and care forever more about finding, nurturing, and creating joy within my work. I care deeply for all that is strange, beautiful, indulgent, ugly, and cute.
